Rap is the form of dance music, which is characterized by the lacerated rhythm, simple harmonies and short musical phrases, which make a circle of a continuous refrain. A vocal is absent; it is replaced by a recitative, laid on preliminary written down instrumental treks.

In the middle of 80th Rap was pretty successfully "crossed" with reggae and funk, symbiosis of Rap appeared with trash- and punk-rock, each of which soon developed in stylistically independent direction. According to the text, the work of Rap must be testified to aspiring of black young people to the new ideals of freedom, although often it is expressed in the excessive use of informal vocabulary.

Bass-guitar has got interesting development in Rap-compositions - often this instrument takes the functions of solo instrument, which resulted in high-quality growth of technical trade of bas-guitar; presently many receptions from the arsenal of rap-bassists are widely used in the most different styles, from jazz to grunge. Gradually Rap crossed a racial border and got to music of white performers, parallel mixed up in the most different combinations with the most different styles. Such black groups and performers, as Public Enemy, Run DMC, Ice-Tea and Ice Cube considerably moved apart the stylistic scopes of Rap, and elements of it now are practically used in any genre of rock, from techno and house to the hard-rock and soul.

In 90th a tendency was set to yet more extreme lyric poetry of Rap-compositions - such form got the name of gansta Rap, or "criminal Rap". In spite of small number of performers, busy in this direction, power of the USA, for example, inclined to generalizations, and would like to lay responsibility for growth of criminality on rock-musicians as such and in particular Rap. To say truth, it is impossible not to mark that the USA campaign begun at the beginning of 80th, having a goal to censored Rap texts, was provoked exactly by the obscenity of compositions of Rap.
